As one way of making a public statement about our need for different policies for transport, PEDAL holds workshops for kids to dress up their bikes, and invites everyone of any age to get on their scooter, bike, wheelchair, whatever, and participate in Portobello’s Car Free Day held on a Sunday in late September.
In 2009 it will be held on Sunday 20th September — starting from the Prom end of Kings Road at 1.30pm and ending up outside the library at 2pm (or in St James Church Hall, Rosefield Place, if wet!) where we will have:
*the Local market from 1.30pm (to book your stall for £10 contact us on 657 2555), then have
*the prize draw for the 5 free monthly bus passes and city car clunb membership for 5 lucky people who are willing to forgo their cars for a month and to record their experiences; and will
*invite people to sign up for a ‘
bike to work’ day when we can go en masse into the centre of Edinburgh (for those who work there), this will be followed by the
*Eco-Comedy (
Isle of Egg) starts at 3pm (ends 4pm) at st James Church Hall, Rosefield Place, a fabulous ecological fable for all the family … Suggested donation: £2 for adults, £1 for kids — if you can donate more to help cover the costs then great, if you are skint then come anyway!

Worldwide, many other cities and towns participate in World Car Free Day. Places like Brussels (all 161 sq km) are car free for a day. Imagine that! Imagine cities and towns where people come first, and where planners know that increasing road space for cars simply increases congestion, by making other forms of transport harder to use.
Imagining a future where priority is given to cycling, walking and public transport is about thinking how we can create a world where one can walk to the local shops and public services; shops and services which are able to remain or become a vibrant part of our everyday lives because we use them. Enjoying, supporting and strengthening local shops and community is part of making sure our future is rosy!
For the last two years we have had a fantastic response to the bike parade and car free day – gathering at the bottom of Kings Road and ending the procession at the High Street at the bottom of Rosefield Avenue by the library.
