Portobello Market, Saturday 3rd March

Satrurday 3rd March is Portobello Market day!

This month we’ve got award win­ning oils, fresh fish and meats, artis­an cheeses, unique snacks, hand made soaps, cards and gifts, sea­son­al veget­able, sushi and noodles, organ­ic herb­al teas, knit­ted gifts, Fair Trade products and a first class BBQ for those hungry mouths

So come along on the 3rd and sup­port your loc­al sus­tain­able mar­ket and find out about the excit­ing devel­op­ments for the next mar­ket in April.

Portobello Market, Saturday 4th February

Saturday 4th February is Portobello Market day! Come along to find all your reg­u­lar stalls selling mouth-water­ing loc­ally-pro­duced and sea­son­al food, and loc­al and upcycled crafts.

Wassailing Celebration

Come and join in  a Wassailing Celebration at the Community Orchard on January 28th.

There will be a nor­mal work day in the orch­ard from 10am to 12 noon, fol­lowed by the was­sail­ing cel­eb­ra­tion from 12 till 2pm. The Apple Wassail is tra­di­tion­ally per­formed in the winter to bless the trees with songs and offer­ings of cider.

There will be an inform­al work­shop to learn some was­sail songs, includ­ing a newly writ­ten Edinburgh Wassail and a song spe­cif­ic to the trees in the Donkeyfield Orchard. This will take place on Monday 23 Janaury at 7 Rosefield Avenue, 7:30 – 9:00pm. Please let Jane know if you are plan­ning to come.

Meals on Reels: a celluloid celebration of Scottish food and drink

Where: The Scottish Café, The Mound, Edinburgh

Join Slow Food Scotland for an even­ing of food, film and con­ver­sa­tion to cel­eb­rate our great Scottish food traditions. 

In col­lab­or­a­tion with Regional Screen Scotland, SFS are host­ing the inaug­ur­al screen­ing in Edinburgh of Meals on Reels, a series of films and extracts from the col­lec­tion of Scottish Screen Archive at the National Library of Scotland. It’s a nos­tal­gic look at food and drink products show­cas­ing bygone products, meth­ods of pro­duc­tion and advert­ising before, dur­ing and after WW2.  Divided into a ‘menu’ of foot­age, it fea­tures everything from Arbroath Smokies, Dundee Peh and Black Pudding to Dunlop Cheese, Lofty Peak cake and, of course, whisky.

Catherine Brown, Scotland’s most cel­eb­rated food writer, will be speak­ing on the even­ing, shar­ing her insights about Scotland’s food traditions.

You will be wel­comed with a glass of wine and, before set­tling down for the screen­ing and dis­cus­sion, there’ll be a sup­per fea­tur­ing products inspired by the film:

  • Crispy Findlay’s of Portobello Haggis and Stornoway Black Pudding balls and Smokehead Whisky Sauce
  • Mug of Creamed Cullen Skink with shards of toasted bread
  • Mini homemade Inverurie steak and Deuchars IPA pies with mashed tatties
  • Vegetarian options will be avail­able on request (please say so when booking)

The cost is £25 per person.

Orchard Work Day

The next work day at the Community Orchard will be on 28 January 2012, from 10 am — 2 pm.

We shall prob­ably work for  a couple of hours and then do some was­sail­ing to encour­age next season’s fruitfulness.

Screening : Money As Debt

Please come ready to cycle power the film keep­ing you warm at the same time!!

Money as Debt is a short anim­ated doc­u­ment­ary by Paul Grignon about the mon­et­ary sys­tems prac­tised through mod­ern bank­ing. The film presents the pro­cess of money cre­ation by banks and warns of the eco­nom­ic sys­tem itself being the root causes of mon­et­ary instability.

Screening : Age of Stupid

Age of Stupid – film/documentary nar­rated by an arch­iv­ist in 2050, look­ing back and ask­ing ‘Why did­n’t we save ourselves when we had the chance? Director Franny Armstrong (McLibel) used the “crowd-fund­ing” mod­el to fin­ance the film, and then spent four years fol­low­ing sev­en real people’s stor­ies from around the world to be inter­weaved: an Indian entre­pren­eur strug­gling to start a new low-cost air­line, a Shell employ­ee in New Orleans who res­cued more than 100 people dur­ing Hurricane Katrina, an 82-year-old French moun­tain guide watch­ing his beloved gla­ciers melt, two Iraqi refugee chil­dren search­ing for their eld­er broth­er, a young woman liv­ing in des­per­ate poverty in Nigeria’s richest oil area and a wind­farm developer in Britain bat­tling those who don’t want his tur­bines to spoil their view.

! Help needed !
We need some help pro­mot­ing and fly­er­ing this event which will be a reg­u­lar monthly gath­er­ing from Jan 2012. If you can take some fly­ers / posters away to put in pub­lic places, we’d be grate­ful for any sup­port. Likewise any­one who can spend an hour or two tak­ing a stroll around your loc­al shops, cafes and lib­rar­ies to put up posters, will be much loved by many !

… because it’s Portobello Organic Market day! In addi­tion to all your reg­u­lar stalls selling mouth-water­ing sea­son­al and organ­ic food, plus loc­al and up-cycled arts and crafts, we have six new traders attend­ing this month:

Whitmuir Organics offer loc­al farm-made organ­ic ter­rine, pate, cooked ham, beef, bacon, quiche, veget­ables, and eggs. They will also have bread rolls from their new com­munity-sup­por­ted bakery;

Maddy Corbin will be selling Scotch eggs (meat and veget­ari­an), cheese bis­cuits, saus­age rolls, unusu­al pre­serves, and tra­di­tion­al hand­made crepe paper christ­mas crackers;

Fare will be on site selling beau­ti­ful ready-to-cook organ­ic meals and Christmas pud­dings this month;

Wood N Menagerie pro­duce wooden gifts, orna­ments and toys hand craf­ted from join­ery off-cuts and oth­er recycled materials;

Changeworks Zero Waste volun­teers will be on hand to give you free friendly advice on how to reduce your waste;

And Portobello Swim Centre will be pro­mot­ing mem­ber­ship deals that can help you reduce your waist.

At the PEDAL stall we’ll be selling our Porty branded t‑shirts (two designs, ‘I Love Porty’ and ‘Home Sweet Home’). Various col­ours and sizes are available.

Getting Scotland Self-building

The Scottish Self-build Forum are host­ing a one-day work­shop on how to increase the num­ber of people build­ing their own home, on Wednesday 21st September. The day will explore the oppor­tun­it­ies for a more access­ible self build sec­tor through­out Scotland, to help boost loc­al eco­nom­ies and provide bet­ter, more afford­able (and we hope more car­bon neut­ral!) homes. The event is free for up to two del­eg­ates per organ­isa­tion. Portobello Organic Market, Saturday 6th August

Don’t for­get this Saturday is the first Saturday of the month, so that means its mar­ket day! Come along to Brigthon Park to get your fant­ast­ic loc­ally pro­duced, sea­son­al and organ­ic food and crafts.

We now have a range stalls selling hot food and drinks, so why not come along with friends or fam­ily and make a day of it with a pic­nic in the park?
