Despite recent funding disappointments, PEDAL continues to go from strength to strength — progressing existing projects, initiating new ones and attracting more and more local people. The loss of core funding — and therefore paid staff and an office — will impact on what we can do in the short term, but PEDAL continue to have ambitious plans to help Portobello become more sustainable.
Please come along to hear about what we achieved last year, exciting projects you can get involved in this year, and what other transition groups around the country have been up to. This is also an opportunity to become a member of PEDAL.

This is a brand new, not-for-profit, festival, taking place at Glasgow Film Theatre showcasing films and filmmakers engaged with environmental and climate change themes. The programme of films and events is designed to appeal to everyone, including families and schools. This fun and informative festival will also feature filmmaker Q&As, debates and fringe events.

Please come down to Portobello beach at noon on Sunday 17th April to help Rowporty launch their brand new skiff! It’s been built by locals here in Porty for community coastal rowing as part of the Portobello Skiff Project (aka Rowporty), an offshoot of the Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club. Rowporty was set up in response to the Scottish Coastal Rowing Project launched in Anstruther in 2009, a project designed to bring affordable, easily constructed and lightweight boats to communities around Scotland for both fun rowing and serious racing, and it already has attracted almost 100 members from Porty and Joppa.
Rowporty started building this skiff in December 2010, the second that Rowporty has constructed in the last eighteen months. All the rowing teams are eager to try her out, and with the increase in numbers of people taking now, the group can really use this second boat.
The new skiff will be carried along the prom from Joppa to Bath Street at noon on Sunday 17th April. There will be a short naming ceremony, and a presentation by the Royal West Rowing Club of a racing trophy which belonged to one of the original Portobello rowing clubs, then the new skiff will be launched into the sea, where there will be a few other skiffs waiting to greet her.
This is specifically a community project, so costs are paid for by fundraising. Unlike sailing or maintaining your own boat, for example, the only expense in taking part in this club’s projects is yearly membership, and perhaps the purchase of the distinctive Portobello green ‘Never mind the Rollocks’ t – shirt. You don’t need any rowing experience to join a team. Not all builders row and not all rowers build, and some members don’t build or row, but everyone is welcome to come to meetings, to arrange for a trial trip, to man the infamous cake stalls at the Regatta, help with fundraising, help with maintenance, learn to use the rescue power boat (never needed, but a necessary safety detail) or work on the history and memorabilia research — or just come along to watch the skiffs out on the water.
Rowporty’s original skiff, ‘Icebreaker’ is a familiar sight out on the water these days, having been completed last spring in time for a few months hard rowing practice, before competing in a season of regattas. This year’s Portobello Regatta will take place on 30th and 31st July, and will feature skiffs from all over Scotland, from Achiltibue to North Berwick. Some of last year’s competitors have also been building a second skiff so the numbers of teams taking part this year will be even higher!
On 19th April, Mike Small of The Fife Diet will be giving a talk about how the Fife Diet started, what it has achieved, and their plans for the future. There will be an opportunity to ask questions after Mike’s talk.

PEDAL has been offered a number of bits of land to use as community food growing spaces. We now need to work out how we are going to use them – is there a group wanting to take on each of the spaces? Would people like a training course (we would need to charge for this as we don’t have any more funding) to kick start the process?

This spring Dave Roberts of Telferton Allotment Association will be running another grow your own course in association with PEDAL.
There are five places available on the course, and the cost will be £15 per person in total (this will cover the costs of seeds, fertiliser and other materials). The course will be held at Telferton Allotments over four Saturdays — 23 April, 7 May, 14th May, and 21 May 2011. Participants will learn how to dig, prepare and sow the beds. Thereafter it would be up to you to look after the crop with Dave being available to assist and help where necessary until November.
The course is aimed at people who have no previous growing experience and who did not attend our previous allotment grow your own course last year (those who attended other PEDAL growing courses are however welcome).
In the first session participants will be allocated a plot and Dave will advise on how to prepare the ground and discuss with you what you would like to grow. The following sessions will focus on preparing the ground, sowing and tending your crop. Dave is happy to help participants to grow whatever they would like, within the bounds of the growing season up until November.
